Can Halloween ever be stylish? Black top, big t-shirt, Billie Eilish? (Sorry)
It’s such a kid’s holiday, definitely emo, and in my home Halloween ranges from Joker, ghosts, spiders, cupcakes and candy to Thriller and original The Addams Family sitcoms that my son loves. You Rangggg?
In many lawns across the United States, Halloween looks like something out of a gory horror film (not my taste at all!). In most German homes, Halloween looks like any other day because most don’t decorate or even care to celebrate it. It’s known as an “American holiday” and sorta laughed off though younger people and expat mom’s tend to gather together (like me) and make something from nothing anyway.
I have mixed feelings about Halloween as a holiday, I always have, but my son loves it and insists we celebrate it. We start by visiting a local farm where they have a carving station for pumpkins the weekend before Halloween and buy their delicious pumpkin pound cake with chocolate glaze. On actual Halloween day, I decorate the table in a cute-spooky way and make cupcakes and hang ghosts or pumpkins we draw in the window. My son and I also dress up - last year I was a goofy Science Teacher and he was a skeleton. We take lots of selfies and eat too much candy. Last year we got extra lucky and found a small group of kids who organized a trick or treat group. They rang our bell and when they saw us dressed up, they invited us along and we collected more kids along the way and ended up with over 30 children. That was awesome! The dads came along and brought a wagon filled with beers and snacks for themselves. It was quite fun. Before Corona, I used to host a Halloween party each year and those were great.
But as far as decor goes, I keep it on the down low. Table decor, something in the windows, music, candles and cupcakes.
If you can relate and don’t like “typical” Halloween decor but still want to do something then this post will inspire you. I’ve also created a Halloween Pinterest board to keep you busy with ideas. Halloween can be done nicely so it’s both spooky and stylish. See for yourself.

A swarm of 15,000 butterflies took over the fondazione adolfo pini in Milan a few years back during design week. It wasn’t a Halloween motif, but it sure could be. (See more here.)
