I started creating digital mood boards on Pinterest (here are three examples below) and I thought I’d explain how to do it in case this is your jam and you want to try it for marketing, sales, your Substack, whatev. I imagine some of you could really use this tool to do lots of great things for your brand or business so give it a go.
What I love the most - they are free to make and super easy - and you can do them on your smartphone or computer. They are also the perfect size for blog posts, Reels and Stories on Insta, and for Pinterest (of course!). Just think of all the great ways you could use these to market and sell your products and services. You can even add your own photos and graphics.
Here’s how you make a mood board on Pinterest:
First, you create a Pinterest account. I’m sure that is an obvious step.
Next, from your main “home” page, click on “Saved”.
Now click on + sign on the right of the screen.
Click on “Collage” on the bottom of the screen.
You will now see a screen with dots all over it (grey dots) and a menu at the bottom.
Click the + sign at the bottom to get started with your mood board.
Next, you see a new window. You will have a search bar, some menu options like “Cutouts for you”, and “Your Boards”, and some images on Pinterest.
Click on “Cutouts for you”. This is the fastest and easiest way to get started for your first mood board. You can start to scroll through cutouts. I am not sure how Pinterest determines what it shows you here, but I’m guessing it’s based on your searches or current boards and areas of interest.
If you aren’t seeing cutouts that resonate, click on Search and type in something that you are looking for. I will show you how that works… I’ll type in “togo red sofa” because I am really interested in finding that particiular Ligne Roset sofa.
As you can see, it shows you cutouts on the top line. You can scroll right with your finger until you see the words “See More” and click on that. This will show you many more cutouts. Scroll and select the sofa that you want on your mood board.
When you see the sofa “cut out” that you like, click on it. This automatically brings you back to the mood board page where the cut out is dropped.
Using your fingers, you can zoom in and out to make the sofa smaller or larger, and move it around the screen until it’s in a position that you like.
Next, you want to add other elements, so click the + sign again at the bottom of the screen and continue searching for elements to add. You can look for wallpaper, lighting, whatever you wish.
If you add elements you don’t like, just drag and drop them to the bottom since the + sign becomes a trash can icon - you can drop them there and the element is gone. If you didn’t want to delete something, hit the back arrow in the top left hand side of the screen.
If you are looking for a light and find it in a photo, not in a cut out, just click on the photo.
This will bring you to a new screen where Pinterest will turn it into a cut out for you! Brilliant!
You can then add it to your mood board. You can even upload your own photos and have Pinterest cut those out too. To do that, just go to your mood board and instead of clicking the + sign at the bottom, click on the picture icon with the landscape and sun, and you can upload your image directly and Pinterest will help you make it into a cut out!
Next, you can keep playing and finding or creating cut outs until you find everything for your mood board. You can even search on Pinterest for “backgrounds” and anything else until your creation is finished. Once you are finished, you click the arrow on the top right of the screen and it will save it as a Pin. You save it on a pinboard, or even a private pinboard. You also can directly download it to your phone’s camera roll.
Wasn’t that easy? How you can you imagine using this tool for your brand?
Love,
Holly
