I'm thrilled to share some very exciting news with you: my first rug collection us underway and being launched with Tisca around the beginning of 2025 (or slightly sooner). I just returned from a trip to Romania, where I collaborated closely with their talented textile engineer (Teodora) and observed closely the many skilled weavers at work, to deepen my knowledge of rug making in order to develop designs that can be brought to life.
Just being again in Romania, back at the Tisca factory, was an enriching experience that deepened my appreciation for the true art of rug making and reinforced my belief in the power of intuitive design because, as I sat with my pen, ruler, eraser and a sheet of white paper I realized something - design has to come from ME and my intuition. Trends, what’s going to sell (or not), what others will respond to… That’s all being placed in the very back corner of this process.
First and foremost must be that I need to tap into my intuition and develop rugs that I LOVE and that I want to own and put in my own home.
But there’s more…
Back to Romania
Romania, with its rich cultural heritage and tradition in textile craftsmanship, is the perfect setting for this creative journey. The energy and excitement that I felt in 2019 when I first visited Tisca was felt a second time 6 years later - nothing but good vibes. Sure, I was only in the beginning stages of designing some prototypes with Theodora, but I was also learning - understanding the intricate techniques that go into each woven design. For me, seeing the precision of the weavers firsthand is so inspiring, their all-female team of artisans who smiled at me as I stopped to observe them… It reminded me of the beauty and dedication that handmade crafts embody. Handmade objects unify people. People’s feelings, their life, is woven into the work.
Why Rugs Matter to Me
Rugs have always held a special place in my heart. I’ve been deep inside the souks of Morocco and to the bazaars in Turkey to explore rugs. I used to frequent the Brimfield market each year to find rugs for my home and clients. Also during my years in the states, I loved visiting rug dealers, I was particularly in love with ABC Carpet + Home because I love the rugs of Madeline Weinrib, the granddaughter of ABC Carpet & Home founder Max Weinrib. I was so thrilled when I met her back when I founded my brand.
Rugs are more than just floor coverings; they’re foundational elements that transform a room.
A well-made rug can last for decades, becoming a cherished part of your home’s history but they also bring a unique style to a room, adding warmth and comfort. They make a room cozy and welcoming. Plus, there’s nothing like the feel of a quality rug underfoot. It adds a sensory dimension to your home that’s both soothing and luxurious, it just feels good.
Rugs can help save on heating bills by adding an extra layer of insulation to your floors, too. They act as a sound buffer as well, particularly helpful in apartment living.
Rugs have an almost magical way of pulling together various design elements in a room, creating harmony and coherence. A room without a rug is like a room without a lamp, it’s a necessary part of the design. In fact, a room without a rug is like a room without a lamp, it’s a necessary part of the design.
A Special Collection
The upcoming Holly Becker collection for Tisca is particularly special to me. My design ethos has always been guided by intuition but I also want this collection to be enduring, sustainable. I want it to feel and look very handmade and special, but also very natural. And the craftsmanship is really a core feature - made well, a thing of beauty.
The first step in design for me is to tap into a feeling I want to bring to a room - a mood or vibe that resonates with me that I can transmit. Once that feeling is established, the space naturally evolves to support your energy and lifestyle. This collection reflects the same philosophy. Each rug is not just a product but a carefully crafted piece that aims to enhance the mood and feel of any room. I want to bring comfort, quality, and beauty to your home that also comes with cozy vibes and a story. In fact, each rug will have it’s own little story - just wait, you’ll see…
Looking Forward
This collection represents a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern design, all aligned with my intuitive approach to creating warm, inviting spaces. I hope these rugs will bring as much joy and style to your homes as they have brought to me so far in this design journey.
I am beyond excited to share the process behind the collection with you as the months go by.
Stay tuned for more…
And thank you for being a part of this incredible adventure with me. Your support and enthusiasm mean the world to me, and I can’t wait to share more soon.
A special note of thanks to the entire Tisca team along with photographer, Agata Dimmich, who accompanied me on this trip to take all of the beautiful photos that you see above.
Love,
Holly
Holly, congratulations on this rug collection! It will be interesting to watch the process through your newsletter.
Congrats on this amazing project! Love all the tactile textural details, and that the project will be providing jobs in a traditional craft/industry.
