What I Learned After Talking Things to Death
Sometimes deep explanations are needed. Other times, it’s a quick shift in perspective.
Tonight I got off the phone with my friend Kim, yeah, an actual phone call. Who even does that anymore, right? Unless it’s spam or bad news, my phone rarely rings. But this wasn’t just any call, it was wonderful Kim, whom I’ve grown close to over the past few seasons, another entrepreneur I deeply admire, who lives in Canada.
We met almost by accident, on Zoom, after one of us reached out to chat. Since then it’s become random Zooms, emails, WhatsApp messages… and now these old-fashioned calls, the kind I used to roll my eyes at when my mom would talk for hours with her friends. Now I’m the one on the phone, while my 11-year-old son looks at me like, Really, Mom?
This particular call was different today because I opened up about some business worries. What I didn’t realize at first (I know she’s a course creator) is that she’s also a business coach - something I’ve been doing more of myself since 2023 or so. Coaching has become such a joy for me: taking twenty years of hard-won wisdom, loads of tears and hard wins, and helping others fast-track their growth. But she’s been coaching far longer that I have, and as I spilled out my concerns, she listened carefully and then gave me one of those rare, lovingly-delivered truth bombs. The kind that’s equal parts “ouch” and “thank you.”
In just a few minutes, Kim reframed my entire mindset.
What could have spiraled into an hour of self-doubt, dissolved in less than 5 minutes of me talking - into clarity and momentum.
