In the world of commercial interior design, trends come and go, but one element that continues to steal the spotlight in boutique hotel design is a fabulous headboard. You know the ones, they have the most lavish, gorgeous fabrics, great shapes, typically very Parisian…
Traditionally seen as a functional piece of furniture, headboards are taking center stage as the perfect focal point in HOME design too - from interesting shapes and sizes to innovative materials, there are endless possibilities for creativity.
I believe that the days of boring headboards are over. Why not opt for statement makers that are functional and unique.
One of the most exciting trends in headboard design that I’m seeing at design fairs and amongst fellow interior designers are the many unusual shapes and sizes. No longer confined to the standard rectangular silhouette, headboards are now available in a variety of shapes, including curved, arched, and even asymmetrical designs.
These unconventional shapes add visual interest and personality to a bedroom, transforming it into a true sanctuary.
Here are some examples to activate your creativity…
But it's not just the shape of the headboard that's evolving – the materials used are also undergoing a transformation.
While wood and upholstered headboards remain popular choices, designers are experimenting with unexpected materials like metal, rattan, soundproofing materials, and even concrete. These unconventional materials add texture and dimension to a room, creating a sense of warmth and character.
Headboards make a fantastic focal point because they provide a sense of balance and symmetry, anchoring the space and tying together the various elements of the room. A well-chosen headboard can elevate the entire look of a bedroom, making it feel cohesive and well-designed.
I think though that the most compelling reason to create or invest in a statement headboard is your unique chance to personalize your space. Whether you go for a bold color, a whimsical shape, or a luxe fabric, your headboard can set the tone for the entire room and make it truly yours.
Of course, headboards go beyond being a statement and serve a practical purpose, too. They provide support and comfort for sitting up in bed, making it easier to read, work, or simply relax. And for those who like to change up our decor frequently, a removable headboard offers an easy way to refresh the look of a room without the need for a complete overhaul.
I have a natural rattan headboard from Finnish brand Matri (Lempi headboard - see photo above of my bedroom) mounted to the wall that is independent from the bed and frame. This means I can easily change the color of the headboard, upholster it, or replace altogether which would make the bedroom look and feel very different with only the headboard update.
With a unique headboard as the focal point, your bedroom can potentially become more than just a sleep space but a stylish, comfortable nest that feels very cozy and unique. And don’t forget about kids spaces too. There are lots of options for the little ones too.
I hope this sparks some ideas for you dear friend - have a lovely day!
Love,
Holly
This is so timely! I’ve been dying to get an upholstered headboard for a couple of years now. It’s great to see so many styles and shapes! I’m a sucker for velvet ones but the rattan ones are dreamy too!
Love the idea of unconventional headboard shapes. I’ve been trying to find the right piece for an upcoming guest room reno, but nothing feels right so I may just go rogue and make something squiggly and fun. Thanks for the inspiration!
