I find checkerboard patterns on floors and walls fun! Especially in classical, period properties, there is something approachable and playful yet subtly elegant in black&white (or red) checkerboard floors.
Congratulations on the rug collection, looking forward to it! I hope you will write more about the entire process, would love to read about it. It is wonderful you were able to spend some time with the weavers and surrounded with materials.
I hope you had a chance to see a bit of Transylvania, too. There is some very beautiful nature there. I have been there quite many years ago but still remember how magical the forests and the hills were... and little villages... and carved wooden architecture... ah :)
Yes, I will share the process for sure. I have been developing a relationship with the brand since I met them in person over 6 years ago, and in 2019 I went to see their factory in Transylvania and they took us deep into the countryside and up to Dracula's castle - it was all just wonderful. It was so nice to return to Sibiu - such a charming and beautiful city, and to return to the factory again so many years later - post Corona. I can't wait to explore more rug making with them and create a gorgeous collection based on the values of naturalness, sustainability and craftsmanship.
This is an interesting design element to explore. I enjoyed your Pinboard and once I had trawled through it, I kinda got a indication of how I feel about this. So I actually need a "maybe" button. Some of applications as tiled floors, seemed could have no other means of being treated. So appropriate in some kitchens. Can't say that the bathroom floors did it for me. Left me with an " outdated" feeling. There is no doubt though that this checkered pattern adds drama to some spaces. Especially as rugs and accessories. I reminds me of the mixed responses to one of my favourite patterns - Hounds Tooth. ( the bigger the better for me). For some bizarre reason I love that pattern. Whereas many don't. That's the lovely thing about interiors - opportunity for diversity.
Great point about it in the bathrooms - I think it's because we attribute checkerboard to tile lay and how it was laid in the mid century with contrasting colors, even before the mid century... So we've seen it so long as such, it's hard to imagine it in bathrooms as a "fresh/ new" design. I get that 100%.
Excited that you’re doing rugs!
Me too - I can't wait to share more with you!

I love checker board and am planning to have black and white tiles in my bathroom.
Will they be matte or shiny?

Checkers are like subway tile, they wax and wane in the trends but done right they can be timeless!
