Ah…..I know that feeling of wanting alone time. At 75 years young, I have never been alone. Husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Caretaking 15 years of my mother-in-law…. Recently one friend wrote me an email stating her husband was on a motorcycle road trip with his friends. She has a whole week to herself in her home. I turned a dark shade of green e vey! (Is that even a color). My husband retired 17 years ago and no interests or hobbies has he pursued. What I wouldn’t give to be totally alone for awhile. I am an artist, writer, and gardener. Stay active with yoga and meditation. But to be in my home alone alone, well that would be ama ing. Enjoyed your article!

I’m also eager for school to start...not least because I’ve got a manuscript to work on, and a new “day gig” to find asap, but also just to exhale. And to get into routines again. And to have time alone to grieve, dream, plan, and watch something indulgent while I eat lunch...etc.

I love that part about watching something indulgent - my son is 9 and there is barely ANYTHING on Netflix I can watch with him around. Same with a lot of the music I like.

I love your list! And yes, all parents especially mums need to have the possiblity of alone time at home. Just as you say, alone time elsewhere is not the same as alone time at home.

Yeah, it's definitely not on everyone's wish list to have some alone time, I know but being alone has a lot of advantages that you don't always realize until you're living in a city apartment where you can't get away from people unless you hide in the basement. LOL

Love reading the words that are in my head 😁 As the mother of a 6 yr old boy OBSESSED with Monster Trucks, I was sooo ready for a few hours of quiet and solitude this summer. I found myself in the kitchen a lot, liistening to podcasts and calming music while my son was immersed in his TV time. There was enough space between us to keep me sane yet we were close enough that he could comment every know and again and we could stay connected.

Monster trucks lol it's so funny right, they are always into something for like 2 solid months and then POOF onto the next thing. My son is currently into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - the action figures, the film, the animated show, it's his biggest passion in the moment. Also a game on my iPhone that he installed called Rise of Kingdoms, which is an intelligent type of strategy game where he really improves his English from all of the reading so I'm not that concerned there as long as it's an hour a day and not the whole day - which he would love!!!!

Mine would too! Ugh! I really struggle with screen time and the "what's to come". My son is 6 yrs old and we limit his screen time to 2 hours daily. Now that school is back in session, those 2 hours will become few far and inbetween, but I know as he ages, the real struggle will begin. IPADs, phones, games, etc. My fear is that the more I want to keep it away, the stronger his desire will become. It sounds like you have a healthy relationship with screens... limited time and he's learning something! How old is your son, can I ask?
